Agriculture, fishery and forestry sectors still play critical role in Vietnam economy, contributing well over 20% of GDP and 28% of total export turn over. However, in the process of global market integration, Vietnam agriculture sector still has not yet fully utilized its existing strength and capacity, the most underpinning reason is the weakness in market forecasting and market analysis.
Since 2007, the Institute of Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development (IPSARD) has organized Annual Agricultural Outlook Conference, starting with coffee then covering other key sectors. Following the previous success years, IPSARD will continue to organize the Vietnam Agriculture Outlook Conference 2011, focusing on three sectors including livestock, aquaculture and rice. Rice and livestock sectors play critical role in the national food security strategy while aquaculture is the leading export not only within agro-forestry and fishery sector, but also in total export of Vietnam.
This year outlook conference takes place in the context that Vietnam agriculture is facing tremendous difficulties and challenges: economic restructuring, high inflation, economic downturn along with fiscal and monetary restrains, high volatility of international agricultural markets, threats of food crisis, climate change, weather shocks, animal diseases, and negative impacts of high price of agricultural inputs on farmer livelihood. In order to address these issues, the conference aims to: (i) review the performance of agricultural sector in 2010 in the world in general and in Vietnam in particular, (ii) provide market analysis and market outlook for key sectors of agriculture in 2011, (iii) update information on strategy, policy and development program of three sectors, (iv) stimulate linkages among stakeholders: policy makers, researchers and industry.
The workshop will be held on 17 May 2006 at 8:00 am in 2011 at the Daewoo Hotel -360 Kim Ma, Hanoi.
