Seminar on “Expanding market segment for the low income people” has been organized in 18th October 2006 by Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and Asian Development Bank (ADB). Low-income markets, with approximate 4 billion people, present a prodigious opportunity for the world’s wealthiest companies to seek their fortunes and bring prosperity to the aspiring poor. The seminar focused on the basic idea of the Bottom of the Pyramid model (BOP) as well as some outstanding example in Vietnam.
A new approaching way about the market segmentation proved that it’s possible for the low income people to take part in the high-quality good and service market segment and they can supply high quality input for the economy. The aims of the BOP model are job creating, poor reducing, developing to create new value and cooperating to get better-off.
At the moments, Vietnam is approaching that useful model. Buying BOP model representative, Ms Pham Ngoc Tram, Executive of GTZ Technical Support Project, has made a speech about the project on connecting small agricutural producers with the global chain value. They has made a great success by applying the model to develop the Thanh Ha Lychee product. Besides, Mr Doan Ba Tuoc, Marketing Director of Prevoir Groups, talked about the life insurance program for the low income people. Moreover, Ms Pham Thi Ha from the Vietnam Women’s Union, talked about the saving-credit model for low income rural women.
According to BOP model, a new giant market has been opened for firms. However, firms should realize that renovation and connection is the key to success when applying the BOP model
