(AGROINFO) – Vietnam, like most of other Southeast Asian nations, has good natural conditions for developing fruit trees which are extremely diversified both in species and categories as seen in the southern part of the country. At present, Vietnam has about 755,000 ha of fruit trees with an estimated output of 6.5 million tons.
The Mekong River Delta represents a largest percentage of Vietnam’s fruit tree area with an estimation of 262.1 thousand ha and a production of 2.93 million tons, sharing 35.1% in area and 46.1% in output. There are eleven fruit tree species that have high potentiality for exportation.
Vietnam has been exporting large quantity of fresh fruits and vegetables to other countries. Fruit exporation of Vietnam has steadily increased over the years. Vietnam’s processed fruits, such as canned pineapple and pineapple juice … are gaining high prestige in international market. Fruit commodity in the south is enjoying good opportunity since international fruit market has been further expanded but also facing challenges because of having to compete with regional nations in exporting agricultural products.
In this context, information become more important as it can help to gain success; IPSARD and its southern center has officially started carrying out Vietnam Agricultural Market Information Project (VAMIP).

A workshop to introduce VAMIP project with participation of all stakeholders in fruit and vegetable value chain of the 9 southern provinces was organized in Ho Chi Minh city on 5 October, 2007 at Mesjestic hotel, No. 1, Dong Khoi Road, District 1.
Activities under VAMIP were to be designed and constructed based on information demands of individuals and entities operating in fruit tree sector in the Mekong river Delta. Therefore, three discussing forums were organized to gather initial comments from representatives of the nine southern provinces on formulating strategies to develop fruit commodity and fruit trade and identify demands on farm product market information at provincial level for the years to come.
Beside the introduction workshop, VAMIP and IPSARD also carried out two surveys to assess actual demands of stakeholders involving in fruit sector in the nine provinces, namely Lam Dong, Binh Thuan, Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City, Long An, Tien Giang, Vinh Long, Can Tho and Kien Giang, on market information. The results of the surveys will represent the steakholders’information demands and be supportive to formulating a proper Actionplan for VAMIP.
VAMIP project consists of three components and is financed by Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) with a total budget of 4.9 million USD lasting from 2007 to 2010. The communication activities under VAMIP will be designed applying a multi-media approach in order to meet demands on using information at different levels and in different conditions. The project is expected to assist in developing capacities in accessing and utilizing information with its results to be institutionalized into activities of various agencies and organizations in Vietnam.
